Playing through time

Back in Toronto, I think at the right time. I'd missed Lexie and being able to flush the toilet whenever I liked. But still feeling the effects of Northern Ontario's landscape - the most primordial I've ever appreciated. The glaciers scraped all the rock clean not that long ago and what grows there now is what's able to survive on exposed granite that bakes in the summer and freezes during the winter. The places that have gone marshy burgeon with all sorts of weird life, and the places that haven't have all these old, old plants - lichen, moss, and huge spiky trees that take the rocks with them when they get blown over. If dinosaurs weren't such cold-blooded wusses, you could imagine them walking around up there.

So that was nice. And we didn't stop eating and drinking all weekend, which was nice too. Lady has a beautiful cabin on a beautiful island, and I think being on an island makes it easier to be more decadent. I'm not sure how. But it did.

Anyways. Got back to news a stingray killed Steve Irwin and my old adviser has said he will, indeed, write me a reference. His intention is to send it to me, though, not the schools in question, which evidently proves he's a fruit. Has he never written one of these before? Fack. City headaches coming back. Now I have to stop being a punk about my proposal. Faaaack.

Any suggestions about where I can find the cheapest possible England ticket?

Ack! At least he's going to write it, though. It's been like pulling to teeth to get that far...

They do things different in Yrop, though. A reference is more like a letter of reccomendation that you take with you on your travels. Not a private correspondance between the referer and the institution.

A-ha! And half the institutions I'm applying for are in Europe, which means I should cool my heels and dig a little deeper before I blow any gaskets. Thanks, Boom!

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend!

Was so sad to hear about Steve Irwin - I think we used to watch his show together eh?

Congrats on the reference! Sorry, don't know about any cheap England tickets...

Did we? I know I've watched it, and been annoyed, enough to think the South Park episode that made fun of him was fucking hilarious. Obviously it's sad, though. He made people think reptiles and things weren't so icky, and now he's dead. Boooooo.

You were annoyed? Man that show cracked me up. I was watching Entertainment Tonight (I know, I know) and they were showing an interview of him with his little girl. So sad.

Yeah . . . his producer is already trying to set up that little girl to carry the money torch. I don't really approve. Her dad died how many days ago?

That's a good description of Northern Ontario landscape. I've been thinking it's beautiful but not spectacular in any way - except maybe for the way how the living things always come to life so quickly during the spring and everything is green all of a sudden just about 10 days after everything was still grey and brown.

It's true. It's almost like a desert after rain that way. Dramatic seasons and changes in season, all of them, from the autumn colours to the drifting snow to things going ultra green and then heavy and then back again. Awesome. Vivaldi, in fact.
